Areas of Research Interests

1. Graphene-based materials as anodes for high performance lithium-ion batteries

Ultrathin-shell graphene hollow spheres and porous graphene nanosheets have been designed and synthesized by a simple template assisted method without surfactant and freeze-drying technology, respectively. The as-prepared graphene-based materials exhibit outstanding electrochemical performance as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. In addition, a new facile approach is proposed to synthesize high-level nitrogen-doped graphene sheets by thermal annealing pristine graphene sheets and low-cost industrial material melamine.

2. Facile Synthesis of Hollow Co3O4-embedded Carbon/Reduced Graphene Oxides Nanocomposites for use as Efficient Electrocatalysts in Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The development of non-noble-metal electrocatalysts that are both efficient and stable is of upmost important for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) which is employed in renewable-energy technologies. The manuscript reports a novel hybrid nanostructure comprised of hollow Co3O4-embedded carbon/reduced graphene oxides (Co3O4-C/rGO-W) by a facile synthetic route involving the pyrolysis-oxidation of ZIF-67/GO-W. The as-obtained hollow Co3O4-C/rGO-W exhibits rather low overpotential of 382 mV at the current density of 10 mA·cm-2 for OER in 0.1 M KOH and the low Tafel slope of 62 mV/decade. A stable potential of about 1.70 V were maintained up to 36000 s, which outperforms many state-of-the-art Co-based OER electrocatalysts.

3. Heptanuclear Co, Ni and mixed Co-Ni clusters as high-performance water oxidation electrocatalysts

Developing efficient water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) made of earth-abundant elements has attracted extensive attention during recent decades. To achieve overall water splitting, it is essential to develop catalysts with low cost, high catalytic activity, and good stability for water oxidation. This research describes that heptanuclear Co, Ni and mixed Co-Ni clusters can be used as efficient catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Compared to the reported molecular water oxidation catalysts, the present catalyst showed comparable activity.
